Habitat for Humanity

We showed up, and we worked.  Because of the light rain, our site director moved us from our original location to a smaller house that needed the painting to be finished.  We covered the newly finished floors with butcher paper, got out our paint brushes and cups of paint, and intuitively divided into smaller groups.  It has been said that some people whistle while they work and some people go off by themselves.  However, wouldn’t you know that our group as a whole talked and talked while they worked.  Multi-tasking!!

We worked hard, but we had a wonderful time.  Someone said that we should make it an annual event  - what a thought.  We ended by coming together and reflecting on our work.   We all agreed it was worthwhile to give of ourselves at such a meaningful time of the year.

Thanks to Dr. Cherie Labat ,Habitat for Humanity board member, Sharon Bissonnette, our chaplain, Noel Allen, Stacey Ferguson and her husband Craig and son Hunter, and Sally Kappus, coordinator.

American Diabetes Association
 School Walk for Diabetes
Sponsored by Lou Monti and her YEB students.
LMonti@bwsd.org
School Walk for Diabetes is an educational school fund-raising program that promotes healthy living, school spirit and community involvement. While raising money for the American Diabetes Association, students learn about diabetes and the importance of making healthy choices including eating nutritional foods and exercising every day. The money raised through School Walk for Diabetes helps to fund diabetes research, education and advocacy in support of the mission of the American Diabetes Association.

The American Diabetes Association is the only non-profit organization supporting all 23.6 million Americans living with diabetes—including type 1 and type 2 diabetes; children and adults. The Association funds research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes; delivers services to hundreds of communities; provides objective and credible information; and gives voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes. Founded in 1940, the mission of ADA is "to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes."

YEB raised $1,800.00.

St Judes Math-a-thon
Bay Waveland Middle School will be participating in the Mathathon for St. Jude Cancer Research Hospital. The students will be completing math problems and getting sponsors to contribute. All of the money goes directly to St. Jude Hospital to help children with cancer. All money needs to be turned in by Friday, November 6, 2009. Last year our students collected $2,700. This year our goal is to raise $3,000.

St. Jude designed Math-A-Thon to supplement a teacher’s existing curriculum, while also teaching students the importance of helping others. The program includes a fun, free math curriculum supplement updated by Scholastic, Inc., the most trusted name in learning, and featuring comic book characters for grades K–8.

More than 10,000 schools across the country take part in Math-A-Thon. To participate, students ask family and friends for pledges to solve math problems in the Math-A-Thon Funbook. The funds raised by the students benefit St. Jude, where doctors and scientists work to eradicate childhood cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. Mrs. Nancy Calhoun is in charge of this project please contact her if you have any questions. Ncalhoun@bwsd.org

Project Fit America (PFA) is a national public charity founded in 1990.  PFA establishes programs in schools, providing vital resources and creating new opportunities for kids to improve their physical fitness and attitude towards fitness and healthy lifestyles with healthy and active curriculums.  Studies show that children who exercise on a regular basis perform higher academically because they are more focused; less tired, and have better control of aggression.  The program has four components which include: state of the art indoor and outdoor fitness equipment, health and physical education curriculum support materials, and staff training.  To date, this initiative has been donated to 650 schools in over 300 cities in 40 states. BWMS received this grant as part of the 1.5 million dollar grants sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation.
State-of-the-art outdoor, above ground fitness equipment. UCLA specifically designed to
address all the deficit areas where children fail fitness tests. The equipment becomes the
permanent property of the school. Shipping to the school site is also provided.

Please join us on Nov. 6th, 2009 for the Official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at BWMS for our state of the art indoor and outdoor fitness equipment.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact Ms. Trina Kidd. TKidd@bwsd.org..

Science Fair

Bay Waveland Middle School required all students to participate in this years Science Fair.  The students must follow the scientific method.  The winners of each category will then move on to the regional competition on March 23, 2010 at the Convention Center.
Science fair projects are a great way for students to apply information learned in the classroom.  Students pick a topic that interest them, and follow the scientific method to test a problem, and reach a conclusion while using their skills of observation to record data.
Science Fairs offer an exceptional opportunity to enrich school programs at both the elementary and secondary level through encouraging independent project work, developing displays, having work judged, sharing similar interests with other students, competing for awards and receiving local, national and even international recognition. Science Fair work provides experiences and motivation that are reflected in both personal and classroom development.
